CIHE’s Annual Lecture 2011
CIHE held its Annual Lecture on 7th December 2011 at The Royal Institution of Great Britain.
CIHE Fellowship Award
The evening kicked off with the presentation of the inaugural CIHE Fellowship Award. This was awarded to ex-CIHE Trustee Sir Rob Margetts, in recognition of his lifetime achievements and contributions to Business-University collaboration.
Keynote Presentation
Our keynote speaker, the Rt Hon Danny Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, addressed leaders of Business and Universites with an informative and thought provoking presentation. Mr Alexander identified that Business-University collaboration is key to supporting the country’s economic recovery. He discussed the need to support innovators and entrepreneurs and in particular by cutting red tape, facilitating the starting of businesses, and protecting spending on science and research. Mr Alexander highlighted the fact that this government inherited a large deficit and an unbalanced economy, and that we must build a more balanced, sustainable model, lifting the basic skills of the country. He said that this government is prioritising long-term growth potential, which is difficult in the current environment but critical to a sustained economic recovery.

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE)
The University of Southampton’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) group also gave an excellent insight into the impact of their projects worldwide. SIFE works on both social and commercial projects, and is part of an international organisation in over 1,600 universities and 50 countries across the world. It aims to harness students´ entrepreneurial and volunteering spirit to make a difference in the Southampton community and around the world. The presentation was an excellent example of student-led university-business collaboration.
