Current career IAG provision in the UK is patchy, often disjointed and increasingly subject to frequent change resulting from uncoordinated political decisions. The many different career IAG providers can help ensure tailored services for different target groups but would benefit from a strategic UK wide framework within which to operate. If individuals are to gain the help they require, attention is needed to ensure continuity both of access to services and of their quality.

A national strategic framework is needed to address these issues of access, quality and continuity, and to identify areas where UK-wide co-ordination would be helpful (recognising the extent and importance of mobility within the UK). The latter might, for example, include co-ordinated quality standards, branding and marketing.

The CIHE is working with partners to develop a national UK strategic framework for career IAG. The development of the framework will involve the relevant departments of the UK Government and of the devolved administrations. It will also involve employers, career IAG professional organisations, trade unions and other stakeholders with an interest in the extent and quality of career IAG provision.
