Engineering and Manufacturing industries Task Force

CIHE has launched an Engineering and Manufacturing Task Force bringing together representatives from industry with those from Higher Education Institutions. The Task Force is being lead by co-chairs Richard Greenhalgh (Chairman, CIHE) and Nigel Thrift (Vice Chancellor, University of Warwick) and driven by a membership made up of leading business and higher education executives. The remit of the task force is to work collaboratively to help provide solutions and insight to strategic problems facing the UK, using the wealth of knowledge and expertise from around the table. The group are keen to use the Task Force as a mechanism for channeling innovation solutions which will incite action from industry, HEIs and government. The task force first met on March 15th for its inauguration. The key question for exploration is: How can business and universities combine to grow the engineering and manufacturing base of the UK? The Task Force members explored the scope and potential outputs for the Task Force, discussing themes such as:

  • labour force skills shortages and attracting talent into the UK
  • international perceptions of engineering
  • scary facts about the engineering and manufacturing sectors
  • the value of international best practice
  • consideration of what research has already been carried out or underway

The task force is due to meet again on the 26th May at the Royal Academy of Engineering.
