Philip Hampton was appointed Chairman of The Royal Bank of Scotland on 3 February 2009

Philip is also non-executive chairman of J. Sainsbury plc, where he was appointed on 19 July 2004.

Philip was Vice President of the CBI from June 2008 to June 2009.

He joined the auditors Coopers & Lybrand, London, in 1975 and worked in London and W. Africa. In 1981, he joined Lazard Brothers, working on mergers and acquisitions, business restructurings and capital markets. In 1986, he was seconded to Lazard Freres, New York, and also worked extensively with Lazard Freres in Paris. From 1990, he worked for British Steel plc as Group Finance Director. He became Group Finance Director of British Gas in July 1996 and BT’s Group Finance Director in October 2000. From June 2002 until March 2004 he worked as Finance Director for LloydsTSB.

Philip was a non-executive director of RMC Group from 2002-2005 and joined Belgacom as a non-executive director and chair of the Audit Committee in 2004.

Philip led the “Hampton Review” into regulatory inspection and enforcement published by the Treasury in 2005 and received a Knighthood in 2007 for Public Service.

Born: 5th October 1953

Education: Graduated from Lincoln College, Oxford, with an MA in English in 1975. He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1978 and is an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He obtained an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France, in 1980-81.
