Rob Margetts
is Chairman of Legal & General Group Plc and Ensus Limited. He is also Chairman – Europe of Huntsman Corporation [ USA ], Chairman of the Energy Technologies Institute, Chairman of Ordnance Survey, Non Executive Director of Anglo American PLC, Non Executive Director of Falck Renewables PLC and a Non Executive Director of Neochimiki SA.

He was born in London in 1946 and educated at Highgate School and at Cambridge University, where he obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering.

He joined ICI in 1969 as a Process Design Engineer in the Agricultural Division at Billingham. He then held a succession of posts before becoming Director of the Agricultural Division in 1982, Director of the Petrochemicals & Plastics Division in 1985, and Director of Research and Operations for the ICI Chemicals & Polymers Group in 1987. He was appointed Director of Engineering for the ICI Group in 1988, General Manager – Personnel in 1989 and Chairman and Chief Executive of Tioxide Group Limited in 1991. He joined the ICI Main Board in 1992 and was Vice Chairman from 1998-2000. He was also Chairman of the ICI Pension Fund Trustee Limited from 1994-2000.

He was appointed a Non-Executive Director of the Legal & General Group Plc in 1996, Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Audit Committee in 1998 and Chairman in February 2000. He joined the Anglo American PLC Board as a Non-Executive Director in 1999, Chairman of the Remuneration Committee in 2001 and Senior Independent Non Executive Director in 2003. He was Chairman of the Audit Committee 2002 – 03. He was appointed Deputy Chairman of The BOC Group in October 2001, becoming Chairman in January 2002 until September 2006. He was previously a Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Remuneration Committee for English China Clays PLC

[ 1992 – 1999 ] and a Member of the International Advisory Board of Teijin Ltd [Japan] [ 2004 – 2006 ].

He joined the Huntsman Corporation as Chairman – Europe in 2000 and became Chairman of Ensus Limited in July 2006. He became Chairman of the Energy Technologies Institute and a Non-Executive Director of Falck Renewables PLC, both in 2007. He was appointed to the new role of Chairman of Ordnance Survey in 2008.

He is also a member of the Council of the Chemical Industries Association [ CIA ], a Trustee and Director of the Council for Industry and Higher Education [ CIHE ], a Director of the Foundation for Science and Technology, a Trustee of The Brain Research Trust, a member of the Court of the University of Surrey and of the Economy and Science and Technology Honours Committees.

Recent previous external roles have included: Member of the Technology Foresight Steering Group, a member of the Advisory Committee on Business and the Environment, Chairman of DTI Action for Engineering, Vice President – The Royal Academy of Engineering, a Board Member of CEFIC [ European Chemical Industry Trade Association ], Chairman of the Government-Industry Forum on Non-Food Uses of Crops [ Defra ] and a Governor of Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine [ 1993 – 2005 ]. He was also Chairman of the Natural Environment Research Council [ 2001 – 2006 ] and a member of the Council for Science and Technology [ CST ] [1995 – 2007 ].

He is a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Chemical Engineers and a member of the World Chemical Engineering Council.

He was awarded a CBE in 1996, an Hon Doctorate in Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 1997, an Hon Fellowship at Imperial College in 1999, a Fellowship of the City and Guilds Institute in 2001, an Hon. Doctorate of Science from Cranfield University in 2003 and an Hon. Freeman of the Salters’ Company and Freeman of the City of London in 2004, received a Knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2006, an Hon. Fellow of Cardiff University in 2007 and an Hon. Fellow of the Institute of Energy [ 2008 ].

He is married with four children, a granddaughter and two grandsons.
