Elaine Thomas, University for the Creative Arts
Professor Elaine Thomas has been Vice Chancellor of the University for the Creative Arts since August 2008. She was previously Rector of the University College for the Creative Arts and Director of the Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College, and held senior management positions at the University of Ulster and Sheffield Hallam University.
Elaine has been Chair of the Council for Higher Education in Art and Design, and a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Board. She is currently a Board member of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), Higher Education South East (HESE) and the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education. She is a member of HEFCE’s Research Strategic Advisory Committee, the Revolving Green Fund Advisory Group and the HEFCE Sustainable Development in Higher Education Strategic Review Steering Group. She is a member of GuildHE, the United Kingdom Arts and Design Institutions Association (UKADIA), the Council for Industry and Higher Education (CIHE) and Higher Education Kent and Medway (HEKAM). Professor Thomas has been appointed a member of the Burgess Implementation Steering Group which has been convened to look at ways of measuring and recording student achievement.
A practising Fine Artist, Elaine also has experience in arts and museum policy, having been a member of the Board of the Arts Council for Northern Ireland, Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Ulster Museum, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Ormeau Baths Gallery in Belfast and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Sheffield Museum and Galleries Trust. She is currently a member of Arts Council England South East and the Kent County Council Film & Television Board. She is chair of the South East Higher Education Cultural Forum and has previously been a member of the Board of the Equality Challenge Unit.
