Professor Bernard King is Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abertay Dundee having joined it in September 1992 from The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, at which he was Assistant Principal and Dean of the Faculty of Health and Food. Professor King was previously Head of the Department of Molecular & Life Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Science at Abertay when it was still Dundee Institute of Technology.

Professor King was educated in Dublin and worked in industry and research prior to taking MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Aston in Birmingham. He is a Companion of the Chartered Institute of Management, a Fellow of both the Institute of Biology and the Institute of Wood Science, a member of the International Research Group on Wood Preservation and of the Biodeterioration Society. As Principal of the University of Abertay Dundee, Professor King is a member of the Association of European Universities (EUA) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). He has been one of four British members of the Council of the latter organisation and currently serves as a member of its audit committee.

Professor King has served as a Secretary of State nominee to the National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting for Scotland, and as a Board member of the Higher Education Quality Council (HEQC) of the UK. He has been a member of the Quality Committee of the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council (SHEFC), a member of the Irvine Committee on the Academic Year, a Board Member of the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) and the Institute of Learning and Teaching, the audit committee of which he also chaired. He has also served as a Trustee of Tayside Primary Healthcare Trust, as Chairman of the Committee of Principals of the Conference of Scottish Centrally-Funded Colleges, as a member of the Board of Directors of Scottish Enterprise Tayside, as a member of the Six Cities Board, as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Scottish Crop Research Institute, as a Board Member of the Scottish Leadership Foundation, and as a Board Member of the Higher Education Academy. He chaired that organisation’s Subject Profiles Review Group and currently chairs its Audit Committee. He is a Governor of the H.M. Frigate Unicorn Preservation Society, Vice-Convener of Universities Scotland, a Board Member of Universities UK, and serves on the Tripartite Advisory Group on Higher Education.

Professor King has had an extensive involvement in research in microbiology and wood preservation and is a well-known international authority in this field, having been a visiting scientist/professor at universities in Sweden, India, South Africa and Australia. He has operated as a consultant to industry, both nationally and internationally.

Professor King writes and lobbies on higher education matters, including funding, research and the future of Scottish higher education in the context of a globally competitive marketplace. Professor King was a member of the Scottish Executive’s Science Strategy Review Group and a member of the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council’s Knowledge Transfer Working Group. In 2002, he was appointed a Distinguished Honorary Professor of Nanchang University in China, and also a Distinguished Honorary Professor of the Technical University of Varna in Bulgaria. In 2003, he was appointed an Honorary CBE.
