Alan Gilbert, University of Manchester
Professor Alan Gilbert came to Manchester in February 2004 as President & Vice-Chancellor-elect to plan for the launch of the single University. He formally took up his duties as President & Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester on 1st October 2004.
Professor Gilbert had previously been Vice-Chancellor of the University Melbourne from 1996-2004, and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Tasmania, 1991-95. During his term at Melbourne, he initiated and, for the first four years led, Universitas 21, an incorporated association of international universities drawn from 10 countries.
An historian, Professor Gilbert received a D.Phil. from Oxford in1973. He has served as a member of the Australian Higher Education Council (1991-95) and the Hong Kong University Grants Commission (1998-2000) and is currently a member of the Council for Science and Technology (CST) and a Commissioner for the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (CES). Awarded the Order of Australia (AO) 2008.
